  Job Task Analysis (JTA)

Job Analysis is the formal process of identifying major job requirements – i.e., activities and attributes needed to perform the work.  Job Analysis offers many benefits.  In addition to generating job descriptions/specifications to aid in hiring the right individuals, it documents job requirements - i.e., identifies all tasks performed by the individual, the conditions under which they are performed, as well as the desired performance. This in-turn forms the basis for future improvements, including: performance appraisals, personnel selection, systems selection, promotion, compensation as well as training needs analysis.

In general, Job Analysis aims to answer the following questions: what physical and mental activities does the worker undertake; what qualifications are needed to perform the job; what are the working conditions (such as levels of temperature, noise, offensive fumes, light); what machinery or equipment is used in the job; and what constitutes successful performance.

Answering these questions as well as identifying and prioritizing tasks that require training and generating training plans involves the capture, analysis, management and optimization of thousands of interrelated variables - and is best attained through ADVISOR Enterprise a web based decision support tool that stores all data in a relational database. For illustration, a brief outline of BNH analysis process is presented:

  • Tasks performed by each position (i.e., operators, technicians and support staff) are identified and decomposed into Sub Tasks and Steps to generate Job Task List - i.e., physical and mental activities.

  • Level of competency, working conditions and standards as well as Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes needed to perform each Task are than defined to generate Job Task Analysis Report (JTAR) - i.e., qualifications needed to perform job.

  • Next, systems and sub systems (i.e., engine, navigation, control, communication, surveillance, defense, etc.) required in the performance of each Task are indicated.

  • Tasks difficulty, importance and frequency are assessed to uncover training priority and generate Master Training Task List (MTTL).

  • Next, Tasks that require training are converted to Performance and Enabling Objectives.

  • Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes needed to perform each Task are than compared to entry levels to uncover gaps and generate training requirements.

  • Viable delivery options are revealed by mapping training requirements to the capabilities of available media.

  • The most economical training options are than identified by forecasting and comparing the costs of viable media over life cycle.

Since 1987, BNH products and services supported hundreds of teams conducting Job Task Analysis and produce highly effective and efficient training solutions. BNH competitive advantage stems from our in-depth knowledge of Canadian, US, UK and Australian military standards, experience with government, corporate and military organizations and our decision support tool ADVISOR Enterprise that greatly reduces the analysis time.

"With ADVISOR, I can make changes on the spot and the graphs demonstrate right away their impact, that have enabled me to cut down my initial analysis from 30 days to one day".

"ADVISOR simplified data validation. Tasks, including reference codes for each position, could easily be exported to Excel and sent to SMEs for review. A step that could have taken up to two-and-a-half weeks to perform is now generated with one hour".

The ADVISOR decision support tool simplifies and speeds job task analysis, forecasts and optimizes training resources, improves resource allocation, generates audit trail to support recommendations and meets the requirements of various military standards. Moreover, by storing all data in a centralized database, accessible anytime and from anywhere with only a browser, we greatly facilitate collaboration and sharing of data among team members, minimize duplication, increase usability and productivity, as well as quickly identify the impact of future changes to tasks, systems, sub systems and policies on training requirements. As a result, the effectiveness, efficiency and relevance of training programs can be maintained over the life cycle, which will in-turn preserve performance, minimize costly errors and keep training programs effective, efficient and relevant.

BNH has proven track record. Our products and services have been successfully implemented on several projects in Canada, US, UK, Australia, Netherlands and Singapore - including Operational System Training Provider (OTSP), Tactical Airlift (C130J), Air Force Technical Training Renewal (ATTR), Maritime Helicopter (CH148), Joint Strike Fighter (JSF), Basic Wing Course (BWC), Blackhawk (CH-53K), Poseidon (P-8A), Military Flying Training System (MFTS), Defence Training Review (DTR), Army Land Vehicle Crew Training, Polar Ice Breaker, Canadian Forces Naval Engineering School (CFNES) Weapons Engineering Technicians and others.
